Alvin Irby
Alvin Irby, Founder and Chief Reading Inspirer of Barbershop Books, provided the keynote address on Saturday titled "Kale Salad and Boogers: How Cultural Competency Creates Transformative Learning Experiences."

Leadership Track

For the first time ever, Utah Afterschool Network hosted a Leadership Track at Jump Start for Afterschool Program Leaders! On Friday, October 13th from 10:45 AM to 5:00 PM, leaders convened to share ideas regarding staff retention and motivation, connecting with industry partners, current afterschool trends, and how to frame difficult conversations.

In July, the Leadership Track reconvened for a follow-up webinar with Garet Hawley from the United Way of Salt Lake to discuss what emerged as a hot topic in October: staff recruitment and retention. Garet shared some excellent insights and resources during “The Bottom Line for Recruitment and Retention,” including:

  • Handshake: This online platform posts your jobs across dozens of universities at once.
  • Turnover Cost Calculator: The cost of staff turnover can be anywhere from 30% to 120% of that staff's salary. Use this calculator to calculate your own cost!
