STEM Saturday | September

UAN’s first STEM Saturday of the 2017-2018 school year centered around the Harvard-based Dimensions of Success Program Planning Tool (DoS). Two experts from Iowa, Gracie Brandsgard and Deb Dunkhase, facilitated the workshop and ensured that attendees left with: 1) a high-quality STEM activity to use in program; 2) an understanding of the DoS Planning Guide that measures STEM quality in active learning (out-of-school time) setting; and 3) a free online resource that aligns with DoS to serve as additional professional development increased confidence in facilitating STEM activities.

Gracie Brandsgard
Program Manager, STEM Lead Iowa Afterschool Alliance

Gracie Brandsgard is the Program Manager and STEM Lead for the Iowa Afterschool Alliance where she focuses on increasing the quality and accessibility of informal STEM programming around the state. Gracie works with key community partners to develop statewide training, influence public policy, improve program quality, and increase support for informal educators and out-of-school time programs. Gracie also provides services in program areas including grassroots policy, advocacy, workforce development, public health, and homelessness.

Deb Dunkhase
Executive Director The Iowa Children’s Museum

Deb Dunkhase currently serves as the Executive Director for the Iowa Children's Museum, a successful nonprofit organization in Coralville, Iowa that serves over 170,000 children and adults annually by inpiring every child to imagine, create, discover, and explore through the power of play. For the past thirty years, she has dediated herself to education in the state of Iowa through her work teaching with elementary level students and leadership roles working closely with parent and teacher groups to bridge the gap between formal and informal educaiton.
