AmeriCorps STEM Specialists: Connecting Students with STEM
Through the AmeriCorps Utah STEM Initiative, the Utah Afterschool Network has the exciting opportunity to place qualified STEM Specialists in schools and afterschool programs at a reduced cost to your organization.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education engages youth in real-world problem solving, develops effective communication skills, encourages creative thinking, and builds resilience in the face of challenges.
AmeriCorps STEM Specialists provide fun, engaging STEM sessions for young people aged 5-18 throughout northern Utah. Through participating in hands-on activities like engineering challenges, coding tutorials, and lab experiments, students dive into a wide variety of topics that foster confidence and competence in the STEM field.
With the widespread integration of technology in the workplace and a rapidly growing number of high-paying jobs in the tech sector, STEM education prepares students for bright futures in any career path they pursue.
What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is the only federal agency for community service and volunteerism, engaging adults in public service work with a goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.
AmeriCorps members commit to full-time or part-time positions different from standard employment. These members provide a minimum number of service hours during their term of service. In return, they earn a bi-weekly living stipend and are eligible to receive the Segall AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of their service.

Based on the timeline of your programming and how many hours a week you would like your AmeriCorps member(s) to serve, you can choose between a 300-, 450-, or 675-hour service term for your STEM Specialist(s). Your organization must confirm its ability to cover the equivalent of a $9.80/hr cost share for each AmeriCorps member. Your STEM Specialist’s stipend payments and HR needs will all be managed through the Utah Afterschool Network and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County.
UAN’s AmeriCorps Program Director will coordinate with you to post a STEM Specialist position opening online, recruit high-quality candidates, and assist in the interview process.
After you choose an applicant for the position, the AmeriCorps Program Director will provide your new STEM Specialist with pre-service trainings, a wealth of curriculum resources, and ongoing support throughout their service term.
