Job Title: AmeriCorps STEM Specialist Reports to: Site Coordinator
FLSA Status: Exempt (Stipend Based) Location: Weber County
Service Term: October, 2020 – July, 2021 Primary Function: Youth Development (After School)

POSITION SUMMARY:
This AmeriCorps STEM Specialist supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The STEM Specialist is responsible for creating a culture of achievement, relationships, and belonging for every youth within our after school programs. The STEM Specialist will tutor program participants in Science, Technology and Math and help to manage the day-to-day tasks of the program. Responsibilities may include serving meals, following a positive behavior management system, communicating with parents, mentoring youth, helping with homework, as well as engaging youth to form connections.
This is an AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps is a unique service opportunity. AmeriCorps members complete a term of service (October, 2020 – July, 2021), with a mandatory 3-hour orientation (Date TBD). Members will serve a minimum of 675 hours during this time. AmeriCorps members will receive a living allowance of $6,075 during their term of service. This living allowance will be paid bi-weekly. Additionally, upon successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps members will receive an education award of $2,360.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Ensure the safety of participants.
2. Promote the after school cultures of belonging, relationship, and achievement.
3. Develop and deliver fun lesson plans that foster the development of a growth mindset, leadership and educational achievement to youth within the after school program setting.
4. Tutor program students in the subjects of Science, Technology, and Math in one-on-one or group settings.
5. Serve a snack or meal to students.
6. Work as an in-ratio staff at assigned site(s).
7. Attend trainings to further insight of field.
8. Maintain a stable, safe and well-disciplined environment with set expectations for both youth and staff.
9. Provide direct supervision of all youth; ensure children are never left alone.
10. Work with assigned site according to the necessary schedule, be considerate of time management and time off requests.
11. Maintain a positive attitude.
12. Communicate with Site Coordinator in regards to all successes and challenges, on a continuous basis.
13. Work under the direction of the Site Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:
● 18 years of age or older
● High school graduate or equivalent
● Interest in working with youth
● 6 months experience with behavior management of youth in larger groups
