The AmeriCorps STEM Specialist will lead hands-on, informal STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in Orem Public Library afterschool programs. AmeriCorps is a national service opportunity, not just a regular job! To learn more about AmeriCorps visit americorps.gov. This position comes with a living allowance distributed bi-weekly in the amount of $207.69 (before taxes). An education award of $1,252.91 will be given to the AmeriCorps member upon successful completion of service.
This position requires:
A term of service from February 18, 2019 to August 16, 2019,
Afternoon and occasional Saturday availability,
12 hours each week.
Responsibilities:
AmeriCorps members will:
complete training related to, and lead groups of teens in using LEGO Mindstorm robots and curriculum,
plan and lead supplemental hands-on STEM activities for youth,
attend monthly AmeriCorps reflection retreats,
assist with STEM-related library events as needed,
recruit volunteers from local colleges/universities and/or STEM companies to introduce youth to STEM-related careers,
track and report data (i.e. number of youth served, volunteer-related data, etc) each month, and
develop a system for cataloging lesson plans and activities led.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, be a United States citizen or permanent resident, and meet the requirements set by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Individuals selected for these positions must pass a background check. Preference will be given to individuals with educational or work experience related to science, technology, engineering, math, and/or education.
