Description

Youth mental health is a major crisis in Utah. Utah high school students are reporting that 36.7% felt sad or hopeless, 22.3% seriously considered attempting suicide, 18.7% made a suicide plan, 9.3% attempted suicide one or more times, and 2.1% had a suicide attempt that required medical attention in 2019.

This is a FREE virtual five-hour training for any adult concerned about youth mental health. You will learn how to make a difference for youth experiencing a mental health related crisis or challenge. Similar to helping someone having a heart attack, this course will help you know when and how to help youth in crisis. Topics include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions specific for those younger than 18. The course includes two hours of self-paced online pre-work that each participant is to complete before the scheduled training. The course will be held on Zoom, with the Zoom ID given to registered participants.

You will learn:

  • Risk factors
  • Warning signs for mental health and addiction
  • Strategies to help an individual experiencing both crisis and non-crisis situations
  • Where to go for help
  • ALGGE steps: Assess, Listen, Give, Encourage, Encourage

This course is valued at $170 per participant, however, USU Extension has grant support that allows us to offer it FREE of charge.
