'How are Babies Made?': Answering Sensitive Questions
Ocean Candler + L.E. Baldwin, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah
As afterschool and out-of-school time professionals, we become trusted adults in youth’s lives. This means that sometimes youth come to us with questions we are not prepared to answer. These questions can be about relationships, sex, and much more. While it might be easiest in the moment to provide a dismissive answer like “This isn’t the place to talk about that,” we know that afterschool teachers might be the only trusted adults that youth feel comfortable asking sensitive questions. In this session, participants will learn four common types of sensitive questions, practice how to answer these questions, reflect on what is appropriate for teachers to self-disclose, and identify important considerations for answering questions in the unique context of their program.
